    All were dressed in tunics with a small cross on the breast to show that they were bound for the Holy Land, but the effect was spoiled by the fact that all were befouled from their long journey.
    Still, their weapons looked clean and well-cared for, and as an order was given, the polearms all rose, gleaming.
